Choosing the right location for your engagement session is one of the most exciting parts of planning your photos. Besides getting engaged, of course! The setting you choose helps tell your story as a couple, whether you're dreaming of sweeping views, cozy corners, or places that spark memories.

At Jessie Geesey Photography, I always remind my couples that this shoot is all about celebrating who you are together. The location should feel like you, whether that means barefoot in a field, dressed to the nines in the city, or cuddled up in your favorite coffee shop.

Here are a few tips to help you find the perfect spot:

1. Choose a Place with Meaning

Start by thinking about what’s important to you as a couple. Did you meet at college? Spend summers at the beach? Love hiking on weekends? Locations with personal significance instantly bring emotion and authenticity to your photos. They become more than just a pretty background; they become part of your story.

If you’re not tied to a particular location, that’s okay too! Think about the overall vibe you want your photos to have (romantic, rustic, urban, adventurous) and that can guide your location choice.

2. Consider the Season

The time of year can drastically affect the look and feel of your shoot. A blooming orchard in spring, a sun-soaked meadow in summer, colorful leaves in fall, or even a snow-dusted landscape in winter all offer different moods and natural color palettes.

If you’re unsure what will look best during your session timeframe, I’m always happy to help brainstorm. Lighting, temperature, and foliage can all play a role, and I can recommend options that photograph beautifully no matter the season.

3. Think About Privacy and Comfort

Public parks and popular downtown areas are beautiful, but they can come with crowds and distractions. If you’re hoping for an intimate, relaxed session, a quieter location may be better. You’ll feel more comfortable and less self-conscious, which leads to more natural, connected photos.

One of my favorite session spots is my farm. Nestled in the peaceful countryside of Southern York County, it’s a hidden gem filled with charm and serenity. Imagine tall grasses swaying in the breeze, wildflowers blooming in vibrant bursts and golden sunlight spilling across open fields. There are rustic wooden fences, winding paths through the pastures and even a few friendly horses who might photobomb in the sweetest way.

The farm offers a variety of natural backdrops all in one place. In spring and summer, the flower beds explode with color, and in fall, the fields turn warm and golden. It’s the perfect place to slow down, be yourselves and soak in the moment together. Bonus: it’s pet-friendly! So, if your pup is part of the family, they’re welcome too.

4. Explore New Possibilities (Yes, I Travel!)

Sometimes your dream location might be a little farther away, and that’s totally okay. I love traveling with my couples to special destinations. Whether it’s your family cabin, the beach where you got engaged, or a mountaintop with a view, I’m always up for the adventure.

If you have a spot in mind, just let me know! We’ll chat through the logistics, permits (if needed), and best times for lighting. The goal is to make the experience as easy and stress-free as possible, wherever we go.

5. Don’t Overthink It

At the end of the day, your love is what makes the photos beautiful, not the background. A simple open field or an empty alleyway can be just as magical as a dramatic landscape when you’re fully present and connected with each other. Trust the process, relax into the moment, and let’s have some fun together!
